No Grey Challenge #3

If you have been reading our blog for a couple years now, you will know that we started this as challenge to stop wearing grey for 50 days.  It had been a long cold, dreary winter and grey clothing had crept in every day from October to March and we were tired of it.  I wouldn’t say that we aced the challenge, but we made a pretty good attempt to add some colour to our lives.  You can read about our first year’s challenge here.  I also tried last year to do the 50 days of no grey challenge and I was partly successful.

So, today is Sunday April 12th and I actually started the 3rd Annual 50 Days of No Grey Challenge on April 1st.  Let’s call it a soft launch.  The first day was a complete fail.  I was in grey from head to toe.  Literally.  SO, I didn’t even bother to take a picture.  The second and third days were also filled with grey. However, the past few days I’ve managed to not wear any grey.

See this:

boyfriend jeans, white tee, long cardigan from Aritzia and my fav animal print slip ons.

And this:

new Flying Monkey jeans, new long style blue tee, faux leather jacket and ballet flats

And this:

Blue plaid shirt and Flying Monkey jeans

And this:

Madewell striped tee, Gap jacket, Flying Monkey jeans (again) and my fav slip ons

Just a short roundup of a few of my non-grey outfits over the past week.  I realize we are almost done the second week of my challenge and I’ll post a few more photos later this week.

After I try and plan something to wear that isn’t grey.

50 Shades update

This blog started almost 18 months ago and its sole purpose was for my sister and I to be mindful of what we are wearing, and to try and NOT wear grey for 50 days.  We have since moved past those 50 days and now write about lots of things.  The fact that our blog’s name name is similar to the popular 50 Shades of Grey trilogy is not unintentional.

The actual movie of 50 Shades has been filming over the past months and I see that just this week the production company has released a trailer.

For those that want a quick preview, here you go:

Although, I read the books, I got pretty bored half way through the second one.  The story has a theme and it sticks pretty close to it throughout all three of the books.  That said, it didn’t stop me from continuing on with the series.  Will I see the movie?  Probably?  Will I be there on opening night?  Not a chance.

But, I have to thank 50 Shades for helping us start 50 Days of No Grey.  And now back to our regular programming…

50 Shades Update

So, it’s been a while since I posted about my progress on my 50 shades days of no grey.  The challenge started on April 1st and will end on May 20th.  Next week.

I have to say that this year, I was not nearly as successful as I was last year.   I’ll blame the weather, the clothes in my closet and the clothes in my closet.  But really, it was me.  I was feeling lazy and blah.

However, the past couple weeks have been a little bit more successful as you will see by these photos:

Cute plaid shirt in blue and Hudson jeans.
Lucky t-shirt, TNA coloured denim and sad grey cardigan
TNA coloured denim and cute floral flats from DSW
Tshirt from Macy’s, necklace from Stella & Dot, J Brand jeans, sad grey cardigan (again), New Balance runners and walking boot for my broken toe 😦

So, just a quick update to show that colour has returned and to let you know that my sad grey cardigan will soon be banished to the upper shelves of my closet.

I will try to make the last 5 days of my challenge worthwhile and way more interesting for both you and me.

Grey, Grey, Go Away!

This “no grey challenge” is not easy!  Its’ not easy, because my closet is full of grey!

If it wasn’t for my  new moto jacket, I think I would be looking pretty sad this past week.  My uniform has been a pair of jeans, a plaid or solid coloured button down shirt (most purchased at J.Crew) and my new moto jacket with Chuck Taylor’s (yes, they are grey).  I’ve had a lot of compliments on the jacket, so I know it was a good buy.  But let’s face it, I can only wear it so often.

I also wore the same outfit exactly the next day, but with this shirt:

Over the past few months, I have done such a good job at pairing down my closet, that there isn’t too much left in there to wear (except grey).   I have carefully looked at each piece and determined whether it needs to be thrown out, donated or consigned.  I love doing this.  It is such a good feeling to keep clothes you love and look good on you. However, that presents a new problem.

You know the problem.  Nothing to wear.

Have you heard the saying, “When the going gets tough, the tough go shopping” ?  Well, that’s that’s what I did.  So, I stopped in at TNA and found this bright little gem:

Won’t it look good with a grey cardigan ?

Let’s face it, I’m lost in the 50 Shades of Grey in my closet.  Springtime weather can’t get here soon enough!

Time Flies…

A few weeks ago, WordPress sent us a notice to let us know that it was one year ago when we started blogging.  Time flies.

This blog came about from a little idea.  It was February and I (being the Canadian sister) was tired of wearing grey and was feeling bored with my wardrobe.  My sister, who was a single mom, working full time and living in Seattle agreed with everything I said about our grey wardrobes.  The book, 50 Shades of Grey, and its trilogy was popular, thus our name was born.  50 Days of No Grey.  It was a simple concept.  Wear no (or little) grey for 50 days and add some colour to our wardrobe to mix things up a little.

This little blog was just meant for us and for anyone who wanted to read about our little project.  And, it is still is that, except we also write about life, clothes, shopping, home, kids, etc.  Our first post was this.  Short and sweet.  A couple other posts followed and then we posted The Rules.  This is the post that pretty much set the stage for our challenge.  From then on, it was fun trying to reduce the grey and mix up our wardrobes.

Our project started on March 29th, 2013 and ended on May 17th, 2013.   The 50 days went by very quickly (or so I thought).   For almost the past two weeks, it has been very Spring-like here in Vancouver. We are lucky – I know!  I feel like know that I have been wearing a lot of grey since October.  I pretty much embraced it at first, but now?  Oh, I am done.  Slightly bored with grey.  Maybe its the sunshine or maybe I am just feeling blah.

Below are pictures of the shelves in my closet where I pull most of my tops from:

Notice anything?

What have I been wearing lately?

Grey. 50 shades of grey.  Yes, there is a little blue and purple, but they are striped with grey.  That pink jacket you see?  It’s for workouts.

But based on the way I have been feeling lately, I think it is time for the 2nd Annual 50 Days of No Grey Challenge.  I’m going on holidays this week, but I think April 1st (no joke) would be a great day to start.  I’m up for it.  Are you??

50 Shades

It wasn’t the book, 50 Shades of Grey, but it was the 50 shades of grey in our wardrobes that made us start this blog.  It was Springtime, and we were coming off of a long Winter season of wearing too much grey.  I was personally tired of that look.   Fast forward 6 months and the weather is changing again.  It is quickly becoming Fall, and I find I am falling (get it, Fall-ing) back into old habits.

I can’t help it, but I’m wearing grey.   It started with a cardigan, then a sweater, Lululemon sweatpants, a tshirt, Toms, and Converse runners.  It’s easy and I am gravitating towards it like the rain on a cloudy day in Vancouver.  On a positive note, I’m trying to mix it up with coloured denim like this:

I am remembering back to the Spring when my sister and I started our 50 day challenge.  It was a pretty easy time to ease the grey out of our wardrobe, but now that Fall is here?  Well, that’s a real challenge.

By no means am I suggesting we start a new 50 days of no grey (because I would fail miserably), but I am going to be watching how many shades of  grey I wear over the next few months.
