Grey for Fall, Fall for Grey

It’s that time of year again!  The kids are back in school, the weather is getting a little bit cooler and I’m thinking of grey clothes. Yes, I have barely worn a stitch of grey over the past few months and I’m starting to get itchy to pull out some of my Fall grey favourites.

With the kids being out of school for the past two months, I didn’t have a lot of time to hit the shops.  But I managed a night away in the States with my husband and a girls’ trip to Whistler.  During these short trips, I was perusing the new Fall fashions every chance I got.  And what did I see?  Shades of grey – everywhere!

Of course, I couldn’t resist taking a few photos to show you this neutral that has had serious staying power for the past few years.

First up:

B is for Bootie

I sure do love my booties!   I have always had ankle boots, but over the past couple years, they seem to be calling them booties.  Whatever you call them, I like ’em!

My sister recently bought this lovely pair, and surprise they are grey:

grey bootie

I was convinced to buy Toms wedge booties after reading rave reviews about them on Pinterest Told Me To.  This blog has the best suggestions for fashion and excellent reviews.  I was not disappointed with these booties at all!

My next pair is your basic black bootie.  Goes anywhere and with anything.  They were purchased last year at Vince Camuto.  So sad that he passed away this week.  He was such a great designer.

IMG_6323 My most recent bootie purchase was a grey (yes, grey) pair with a stacked heel:

Although they don’t look grey, they are a bit of a dirty grey with a dash of brown around the edges.  Super comfortable, although they have a little bit of flannel inside and my feet tend to get a little toasty while wearing them.

Lastly, my Blundstones. bloodstones with boyfriend jeans

I wrote about them here last year and it is one of our most viewed posts.  Blundstones are a hard wearing boot.  They seem to last forever!  I prefer wearing mine with skinny jeans and pants, but I have also tried them with boyfriend jeans, although I am not convinced it is the right look (for me, anyway).

I have had my eye on this pair by Sam Edelman for months now.  But maybe I have enough booties, or maybe not…

Fun Graphic Shirts

Graphic tees have been fashionable for years now and while I don’t own many myself, I admire them greatly.  I’ve come across some that have made me smile. I should wear this shirt every morning:

Ok, But First Coffee

My sister found this one and I should probably wear it every few days:

No more babies in our household, but I thought it would make a cute gift:

Hello
Hello, I’m new here

I found this at Marshall’s and didn’t buy it.  But it’s cute and fun and the blue is a nice pop of colour:

I really like the arrows and the fact they are on a grey t-shirt, well…why not?

This one makes me laugh out loud:

This shirt caught my eye, because some days you feel…

I think I’ll put some new t-shirts on my shopping list.  Will you?

If You Make It They Will Buy It (at least I will)

In Europe and the United States, surveys show that grey is the color most commonly associated with conformity, boredom, uncertainty, old age, indifference, and modesty. Only one percent of respondents chose it as their favorite color. (source: Wikipedia)

Clearly, my sister and I beg to differ. My biggest problem with gray is sometimes confusing the difference in how Canadians and Americans spell the word. Other than that I’m all good.

Take these boots for example:

grey bootDo they scream conformist? Do you yawn with boredom looking at them? Is there anything old age-like about them? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions feel free to go surf elsewhere.

I found these boots at Nordstrom a few days ago. They are by KBR (Italian brand I’ve never heard of and more reasonably priced than I’d expect an Italian brand to be). Perfect for fall in my opinion!

Followed those up with a pair of Genetic denim dark gray skinnies. Sooo comfortable and on the clearance rack at Nordstrom, too! Because I’m happy (insert Pharrell Williams tune here).

gray geneticFinally, after seeing so many magazine spreads showing the new slouchy sweatpants in dressier fabrics I made a quick run into J Crew where I scored (well, had to order in my size) a pair of…wait for it…gray flannel slouchy sweatpants! Sooo comfy plus they look cool with heels or boots or maybe even a cute tennis shoe? (that’s “runners” in my homeland).

gray sweatThe picture isn’t flattering. I get that. But trust me, like your fave Lululemons only you can wear them out to dinner!

Anyways, long story short, for me gray is anything but boring. Thank you, thank you to those designers that keep churning it out. As long as they do, I’ll keep buying it.

Mini me

My daughter is 5 and a little bit of a clothes horse. I don’t encourage or discourage her fashion sense, but I might ooh and aww just a little bit when she wears something I think is cute. On alternate days, I might also try to teach her about matching (to no avail).

She is very lucky to receive clothes from my sister’s two girls. A couple times a year, large bags of clothes arrive in various sizes and mostly bright cheerful colours. It’s like Christmas and a birthday all at once as we pull out each item and try it on.

I’m also lucky to have a friend who often passes along her daughter’s too small clothes. Just last week, my friend brought over a bag filled to the brim. She said, “I picked out some things that I thought you would like. Hmmm… What did that mean?

IMG_5731

Yup, those clothes are several shades of grey.  Grey or gray, however you like to spell it, my friend thinks I like grey.  It’s not that she’s wrong, but I thought it was interesting that she gave my daughter grey clothes.  Which I’m guessing means that my friend wears a lot of grey, and so does her daughter, and so on, and so on.

Does your daughter wear grey?

Fall for Grey or Grey for Fall ?

It’s hard to believe, but Fall is just around the corner.  Here in beautiful BC, we are still having summer weather.  The sun is a little lower in the sky and the morning and evening temperatures have a coolness in them, but the days are incredibly warm!

I’m still wearing cotton pants, t-shirts and even shorts during the day.  So, I can’t quite get my head around sweaters, boots and scarves just yet.  That said, I am seeing all lots of ads for Fall clothes; the plaids, blacks, jewel tones, and of course…grey!

The Bay and Banana Republic caught my eye with these:

IMG_6723 IMG_6726 IMG_6740

I love the looks I am seeing.  Grey and greige together look so classic and timeless.  There will definitely be a few new pieces in these colours heading to my closet in the next few months.

Looking back, I think there is a reason we did our 50 days of no grey challenge in the Spring, because it would be way too hard to try and not wear grey in the Fall.

50 Shades update

This blog started almost 18 months ago and its sole purpose was for my sister and I to be mindful of what we are wearing, and to try and NOT wear grey for 50 days.  We have since moved past those 50 days and now write about lots of things.  The fact that our blog’s name name is similar to the popular 50 Shades of Grey trilogy is not unintentional.

The actual movie of 50 Shades has been filming over the past months and I see that just this week the production company has released a trailer.

For those that want a quick preview, here you go:

Although, I read the books, I got pretty bored half way through the second one.  The story has a theme and it sticks pretty close to it throughout all three of the books.  That said, it didn’t stop me from continuing on with the series.  Will I see the movie?  Probably?  Will I be there on opening night?  Not a chance.

But, I have to thank 50 Shades for helping us start 50 Days of No Grey.  And now back to our regular programming…

50 Days – Done!

And we’re done!  Day 50 is today.  My no grey challenge was a marginal success compared to last year. I definitely struggled more, but besides the weather I think I was a little lazy complacent when it came to banishing the grey from my day to day (hey, that rhymes!).

Grey is my go to.  It’s my easy to put on. It’s my always looks good (or does it?).

I love the idea of wearing a neutral head to toe.  While I was out shopping today, I saw a woman of a similar age wearing shades of cream; blouse, scarf, skinny jeans and flats.  She looked fantastic.  It reminds me of Gwyneth Paltrow in the movie A Perfect Murder.  Her wardrobe was classic.  Simple, yet stylish neutrals paired together.

Today was sunny and I was feeling sunny and colourful, so I ended my challenge like this:

IMG_5582
cute Tiffany coloured flats from Vince Camuto

I’m glad the challenge is over, but I do wish I had done a better job.  Oh, well, there’s always next year!

50 Shades Update

So, it’s been a while since I posted about my progress on my 50 shades days of no grey.  The challenge started on April 1st and will end on May 20th.  Next week.

I have to say that this year, I was not nearly as successful as I was last year.   I’ll blame the weather, the clothes in my closet and the clothes in my closet.  But really, it was me.  I was feeling lazy and blah.

However, the past couple weeks have been a little bit more successful as you will see by these photos:

IMG_6145
Cute plaid shirt in blue and Hudson jeans.
IMG_5489
Lucky t-shirt, TNA coloured denim and sad grey cardigan
IMG_5494
TNA coloured denim and cute floral flats from DSW
IMG_5518
Tshirt from Macy’s, necklace from Stella & Dot, J Brand jeans, sad grey cardigan (again), New Balance runners and walking boot for my broken toe 😦

So, just a quick update to show that colour has returned and to let you know that my sad grey cardigan will soon be banished to the upper shelves of my closet.

I will try to make the last 5 days of my challenge worthwhile and way more interesting for both you and me.

Blue Skies Ahead

This no grey challenge is particularly hard for me this year.  I can’t explain why, but it just is.  Most of my shirts and tees are grey and the weather here is still quite cool, so I don’t feel like the summer t-shirts are ready to come out of storage.

Here is a typical outfit of the past few weeks:

IMG_6025

Grey cargo pants, grey shirt, black and white cardigan, boots and a scarf.  It looks good together, but it’s 50 many shades of grey.

That said, there was a little brightness over the weekend.  A quick overnight trip to the Seattle area got me this t-shirt:

IMG_5460

Isn’t that a pretty green-blue colour?  It’s by Maison Jules and apparently a store favourite.

The kitchen also got a pick me up with this tea towel from Target:

IMG_5463

Isn’t it fun?   It was only $2 and such a nice pop of colour for the kitchen.

Back to the no grey challenge and I would have to say that my progress to date has been sad.  Not quite a failure, but no passing grade.  At least two days per week, I am not wearing grey and I feel pretty put together.  But the rest of the week…blah, blah, blah.

Oh well, not to worry.  I feel that blue skies are definitely coming my way.
