Pinned & Tried – Fashion

When I saw this outfit from Posh Classy Mom, I just knew I could recreate the look  for me:

I already had the grey jeans and a chambray top.  I didn’t have the grey pumps, so I changed it slightly:

img_4840

Ok, so I’m slightly more wrinkled than the inspiration photo.  I swear that my shirt does not look that wrinkled while I am wearing it!  #ohsure

These black platform wedges are the only (repeat only) heels I have.  #needtogoshopping

I’ve had this top for about a month now and never considered wearing it with my grey jeans – not sure why?   But since pinning this image, I have worn it a couple of times with my grey converse and I have to say, it’s a successful pinned & tried.

Saturday Night Nails

I rarely never do my nails.  I’m a SAHM and with kids and a dog.  I like gardening and cleaning, so I rarely give my nails a second thought.  That’s not to say I don’t do pedicures – I LOVE pedis!!
But back to my nails…  I have nail envy when I see nails like this:

marsala-nail-polish

So, with the kids in bed and the hubby out, I thought I’d give myself a manicure.  These polishes are at least a year old.  At least.  Since then, I’ve heard about better products for the environment and me.

See this list?  I want to start using better for me polishes.
But, in the meantime I decided to use these old products to see if I liked the result.

Guess what?  I like it!  This grey (Essie Cocktail Bling) goes well with my sweater (thanks, sis).

What a surprise! 😉

What did you do on Saturday night?

Grey for Fall, Fall for Grey

It’s that time of year again!  The kids are back in school, the weather is getting a little bit cooler and I’m thinking of grey clothes. Yes, I have barely worn a stitch of grey over the past few months and I’m starting to get itchy to pull out some of my Fall grey favourites.

With the kids being out of school for the past two months, I didn’t have a lot of time to hit the shops.  But I managed a night away in the States with my husband and a girls’ trip to Whistler.  During these short trips, I was perusing the new Fall fashions every chance I got.  And what did I see?  Shades of grey – everywhere!

Of course, I couldn’t resist taking a few photos to show you this neutral that has had serious staying power for the past few years.

First up:

B is for Bootie

I sure do love my booties!   I have always had ankle boots, but over the past couple years, they seem to be calling them booties.  Whatever you call them, I like ’em!

My sister recently bought this lovely pair, and surprise they are grey:

grey bootie

I was convinced to buy Toms wedge booties after reading rave reviews about them on Pinterest Told Me To.  This blog has the best suggestions for fashion and excellent reviews.  I was not disappointed with these booties at all!

My next pair is your basic black bootie.  Goes anywhere and with anything.  They were purchased last year at Vince Camuto.  So sad that he passed away this week.  He was such a great designer.

IMG_6323 My most recent bootie purchase was a grey (yes, grey) pair with a stacked heel:

Although they don’t look grey, they are a bit of a dirty grey with a dash of brown around the edges.  Super comfortable, although they have a little bit of flannel inside and my feet tend to get a little toasty while wearing them.

Lastly, my Blundstones. bloodstones with boyfriend jeans

I wrote about them here last year and it is one of our most viewed posts.  Blundstones are a hard wearing boot.  They seem to last forever!  I prefer wearing mine with skinny jeans and pants, but I have also tried them with boyfriend jeans, although I am not convinced it is the right look (for me, anyway).

I have had my eye on this pair by Sam Edelman for months now.  But maybe I have enough booties, or maybe not…

Fun Graphic Shirts

Graphic tees have been fashionable for years now and while I don’t own many myself, I admire them greatly.  I’ve come across some that have made me smile. I should wear this shirt every morning:

Coffee First
Ok, But First Coffee

My sister found this one and I should probably wear it every few days:

No more babies in our household, but I thought it would make a cute gift:

Hello
Hello, I’m new here

I found this at Marshall’s and didn’t buy it.  But it’s cute and fun and the blue is a nice pop of colour:

I really like the arrows and the fact they are on a grey t-shirt, well…why not?

This one makes me laugh out loud:

This shirt caught my eye, because some days you feel…

I think I’ll put some new t-shirts on my shopping list.  Will you?

Colour Me Happy ?

We have all heard how colour (or color for our American readers) can influence your life.  There are books, articles and many theories about the psychology of colour.  Red in the dining room, lavender or pale colours in a bedroom and yellow for energy are all supposed to help us eat, sleep and live better lives.

I found this graphic on Pinterest and unfortunately, I cannot find the original source.  If you know it, please pass it along to me.

Immediately, I looked at the meaning of the colour grey (or gray) and I wasn’t surprised by what I saw.

0a3a5d79ab070e5588a61c76a2b16b3a

The positives of grey are reliable, solid and intelligent.  The cons were gloomy, sad and conservative.  All true, dontcha think?  When we first started this blog it was because we were feeling sad and gloomy from wearing grey or gray all Fall and Winter.  Another one of my fav colours is turquoise, but I was surprised when it showed one of the negatives of the colour as envy.  Too close to green, I guess.  Tan/Beige have similar characteristics to grey, so I’ll try and stay away from those shades.   The colours of silver, gold and white only show positives, so maybe I should wear more of those?

After searching around, I saw this info graphic about the colour of your door.

e238d87d69c3e10072de2138d56438f7

My door is black and I have a couple, but not all of the strengths of a black door owner.  Those of you with grey doors are solid, calm, cool and collected.

Sounds like it is better to have a grey door than a grey wardrobe.  At least I’m doing something right.  😉

Have fun checking your colours!

If You Make It They Will Buy It (at least I will)

In Europe and the United States, surveys show that grey is the color most commonly associated with conformity, boredom, uncertainty, old age, indifference, and modesty. Only one percent of respondents chose it as their favorite color. (source: Wikipedia)

Clearly, my sister and I beg to differ. My biggest problem with gray is sometimes confusing the difference in how Canadians and Americans spell the word. Other than that I’m all good.

Take these boots for example:

grey bootDo they scream conformist? Do you yawn with boredom looking at them? Is there anything old age-like about them? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions feel free to go surf elsewhere.

I found these boots at Nordstrom a few days ago. They are by KBR (Italian brand I’ve never heard of and more reasonably priced than I’d expect an Italian brand to be). Perfect for fall in my opinion!

Followed those up with a pair of Genetic denim dark gray skinnies. Sooo comfortable and on the clearance rack at Nordstrom, too! Because I’m happy (insert Pharrell Williams tune here).

gray geneticFinally, after seeing so many magazine spreads showing the new slouchy sweatpants in dressier fabrics I made a quick run into J Crew where I scored (well, had to order in my size) a pair of…wait for it…gray flannel slouchy sweatpants! Sooo comfy plus they look cool with heels or boots or maybe even a cute tennis shoe? (that’s “runners” in my homeland).

gray sweatThe picture isn’t flattering. I get that. But trust me, like your fave Lululemons only you can wear them out to dinner!

Anyways, long story short, for me gray is anything but boring. Thank you, thank you to those designers that keep churning it out. As long as they do, I’ll keep buying it.

Mini me

My daughter is 5 and a little bit of a clothes horse. I don’t encourage or discourage her fashion sense, but I might ooh and aww just a little bit when she wears something I think is cute. On alternate days, I might also try to teach her about matching (to no avail).

She is very lucky to receive clothes from my sister’s two girls. A couple times a year, large bags of clothes arrive in various sizes and mostly bright cheerful colours. It’s like Christmas and a birthday all at once as we pull out each item and try it on.

I’m also lucky to have a friend who often passes along her daughter’s too small clothes. Just last week, my friend brought over a bag filled to the brim. She said, “I picked out some things that I thought you would like. Hmmm… What did that mean?

IMG_5731

Yup, those clothes are several shades of grey.  Grey or gray, however you like to spell it, my friend thinks I like grey.  It’s not that she’s wrong, but I thought it was interesting that she gave my daughter grey clothes.  Which I’m guessing means that my friend wears a lot of grey, and so does her daughter, and so on, and so on.

Does your daughter wear grey?

Fall for Grey or Grey for Fall ?

It’s hard to believe, but Fall is just around the corner.  Here in beautiful BC, we are still having summer weather.  The sun is a little lower in the sky and the morning and evening temperatures have a coolness in them, but the days are incredibly warm!

I’m still wearing cotton pants, t-shirts and even shorts during the day.  So, I can’t quite get my head around sweaters, boots and scarves just yet.  That said, I am seeing all lots of ads for Fall clothes; the plaids, blacks, jewel tones, and of course…grey!

The Bay and Banana Republic caught my eye with these:

IMG_6723 IMG_6726 IMG_6740

I love the looks I am seeing.  Grey and greige together look so classic and timeless.  There will definitely be a few new pieces in these colours heading to my closet in the next few months.

Looking back, I think there is a reason we did our 50 days of no grey challenge in the Spring, because it would be way too hard to try and not wear grey in the Fall.
