Pinned & Tried

Six months ago, I sent my sister this picture with a text saying, “We need to get this vest.”

She quickly agreed, but neither of us purchased it.  As time passed, I often thought about buying that vest.  Instead of buying it, I randomly pinned images of how to wear it.  Like these:

Then one day, the vest happened upon me.  I was dropping off some donations at a thrift store and the woman in line ahead of me happened to be donating this:

When I had the chance, I asked for it.  Surprise, surprise, it was the elusive utility vest that I wanted, but never looked for.  The store offered it to me for $3!  How could I say no?

Fast forward a couple of days and voilá:

I love the vest!  It’s so easy to wear and style.  I don’t do a lot of thrifting, but in this case I’m glad I was at the right place at the right time.

Pinned & Tried – Beauty

I don’t think I’ve ever posted a beauty pinned and tried, but there’s always a first time, isn’t there?

A few weeks ago, I read this post on South by Northwest and this diy particular beauty hack caught my eye.

I’m blond, with highlights and a few grey hairs.  I try not to wash my hair too many times a week and I’m lucky my hair doesn’t get too oily or greasy.

On days when I don’t have time to wash my hair, I use a few sprays of this Kevin Murphy dry shampoo

unnamed-2

It works well and smells great.  It’s a little expensive, but since I use it infrequently it lasts a long, long time.

So, when I read about a diy dry shampoo, I knew I had to give it a try.  There were only 3 ingredients; cornstarch, cinnamon and a few drops of an essential oil (I used lavender).  I used a clean little jar and here’s what it looked like when I mixed it up.

I had an extra make up brush (yes, I cleaned it first) to dab on the mixture and I’m happy to say it worked!  It blended quite well, smelled just fine and it worked!  I’m not 100% sure that I will give up the regular dry shampoo just yet, but I’m glad I found a natural solution that I can make at home and use frequently.

All in all, I would call this one successful Pinned & Tried Beauty Hack!

Pinned & Tried

It has been quite a while since I posted a Pinned & Tried – any edition.  Over the past week, this rainy weather has had me looking at pictures and photos of a sunnier time.  Say, last summer?

It got me thinking to this outfit that I saw on Pinterest:

06143d620eaca78f3c80da7d5b72d118

Cute and easy, eh?

I realized I had pretty much every piece in my wardrobe. I mean, really, who doesn’t have have a striped maxi dress and a jean jacket in her closet these days?

So, here’s my recreation:

IMG_9678

The striped dress is from Joe Fresh and I liked it so much I bought another one in black and grey 🙂  The jean jacket is actually quite old, but hasn’t been worn much, so it is like new!  The purse is light grey and from Kate Spade.  You can’t seem my feet, but I think I was wearing flip flops or flat white sandals.

I guess the only sad thing about this Pinned & Tried is that I don’t have cognac coloured accessories or shoes.  So, those are now on my list for this upcoming Spring/Summer wardrobe.

I did pick up these flip flops from DSW on a recent trip to Palm Springs:

They are pretty comfortable, but I think I will keep looking for more of a sandal than a flip flop in this colour.

I have my eye on this great bag from Matt & Nat:

So in closing, I would call this a fairly successful Pinned & Tried.  But just wait until I get that new bag to complete the look!

Pinned & Tried

It’s been a little while since I posted a Pinned & Tried – Fashion edition, so here goes.  My latest obsession has been the kimono and over the past few months, I’ve been watching from afar.  At first I didn’t know it was called a kimono because I immediately thought of the traditional Japanese kimono like this:

800px-Kimono_lady_at_Gion,_Kyoto

But the current definition of kimono is what I have been seeing and pinning on Pinterest.  It usually looks light weight, flowy and floral.  Sort of like this:

Then one day when reading Get Your Pretty On, I saw this:

pretty fix: july kimono

And that kimono front and centre caught my eye.  So after a little research, I realized I could order from Amazon.ca and I did.  It arrived in less than 3 weeks for the bargain price of less than $15 Cdn!  I have to admit, I was pretty surprised at the quality.  The colours are exactly as shown (phew!) and so far the stitching and sewing seem to pretty good.  I’m not expecting this kimono to last for years but if I can get 2 seasons out of it, I’ll be happy.

So now that I have my kimono, the dilemma becomes not when to get one, but how to wear one. Thankfully, I have been pinning some images and decided to try wearing it like this:

kimono

If I had not pinned this pin-spiration outfit, I would not have tried it.  But I have to say, that as much as I love the idea of shorts with the kimono, I don’t love it on me. Maybe it’s because the shorts and the kimono are the same length?  I’m also not a fan of my sandals, so that isn’t helping me.

Next, I swapped the shorts for jeans and the sandals for flip flops:
kimono

and lastly, I put on ankle length jeans and a pair of ballet flats:

kimono

The last look is my favourite, but if I was able to get a pair of sandals that I really liked, then I would definitely try wearing the kimono like my pin-spiration photo.

All in all, I am so happy with my find, my purchase and my new kimono.  I call this one a successful Pinned & Tried!

Pinned & Tried – Gift

This is the last week of school for those of us in Canada and it’s time to reward those hardworking teachers!

A quick look at Pinterest and you can find all sorts of great end of year gift ideas for your teacher.  The one that caught my eye was this:

end of year gift idea in a cup

So, I modified it a little and filled it with sunscreen, lemonade, lip balm and a gift card to the local mall and here is my result:

end of year teacher gift in a cup

I’m not a teacher, but I think they will love a gift like this.  A little personal, practical and fun.

What a great way to end the school year; with a successful Pinned & Tried!

Pinned & Tried

As I type this, I’m wondering if the title should be Pinned & Tried & Failed.  Keep reading to find out why. I scooped this old steamer style trunk off my parents a couple years ago.  My Dad was given it in the early 60s and it had not been used in years.  As a result, it smelled.  Bad.  Musty.  I tried keeping holiday decorations in the trunk, but they all came out smelling bad and musty. IMG_6058 IMG_6051 So, being the true pinner that I am, I knew there had to be a pin-solution for me.  It didn’t take me long to find this : de5cdb5672e0be47e36a816a760047fd Direct from Apartment Therapy were also these helpful tips.   Some of these things I did try:

  1. airing outside in the sun
  2. baking soda – boxes of the stuff
  3. coffee grounds – more than Starbucks could imagine
  4. vinegar
  5. old newspapers (?)

I didn’t try the kitty litter, because it was just too late for me.  I was tired of trying different methods with no results and I needed to use the trunk. So, I decided to go hard core.  What is hard core you ask?  Paint.  Leftover Benjamin Moore Simply White in semi-gloss. IMG_6061 I had hesitated going this route as I would have to paint over the paper lining and it seemed harsh.  However, I soon got over my guilt and proceeded.  It wasn’t my best paint job.  I barely cut into the corners and I slapped on 3 coats as quickly as the paint would dry.   But you know what?  It worked!! This lovely old steamer trunk has the fresh true smell of paint which is much much better than the old musty smell it had been carrying around for years. So unfortunately, this is one pin that didn’t work out.  On the positive side, I now have a trunk that won’t make my holiday decorations smell and that’s a good thing! linking up with: Thrifty Decor ChickThe Happy HousieThe Jenny EvolutionThe Pin JunkieTiny SidekickSweet HauteCurly Crafty MomBonBon Rose Girls

Pinned & Tried

Today, this is the Food Edition of Pinned & Tried.  Yum!  My husband and son are really great eaters and try everything I put on the table.  My daughter, on the other hand, is a little more selective.  She likes a lot of things, but isn’t so keen to try something new.  While making dinner a couple nights ago, I needed to add some veggies  and I was tired of the usual raw carrots, cucumber and steamed broccoli, you know?

So, I remembered I had seen this recipe on Pinterest:

Southwest Bean & Corn Salad

I know corn and beans are not really considered veggies, but I thought it would be a great addition to our fish and since I had all of the ingredients, I decided to give it a try!

Ingredients
15 oz. can black beans
8 oz. cherry tomatoes, diced
1 cup corn (I used a can)
1 large orange bell pepper, diced
1/3 cup red onion, finely diced
3/4 cup loosely packed cilantro, stems removed
1 avocado

Dressing
Juice from 1 large orange
Juice from 1 1/2 limes (I didn’t have limes, so used lemon juice)
1/4 tsp. cumin, or more to taste
1/2 tsp. agave (or honey)
1/8 tsp. salt
Optional: cayenne pepper or chipotle for a kick!

Directions
Make the dressing: in a small bowl, whisk together all ingredients until agave/honey is incorporated. It should yield about 1/2 cup dressing. Set aside.
In a separate bowl, combine the beans (rinsed and drained), tomato, corn, red onion, bell pepper, and roughly chopped cilantro.
Add the dressing and toss to combine.
Best if chilled 1 hour (can be longer) before serving.
Stir well before serving, as some of the dressing gathers at the bottom.
Top with diced avocado right before serving.

This was so easy and tasted so good.  I wished I had used lime in the dressing recipe as I think it would have had a better flavour, but it was still very very good and refreshing.  It’s a great summer salad and will definitely make it again.  Even my daughter ate it, so that makes it a very successful pinned & tried!

Pinned & Tried

Hello!

Long time, no post!  I have just returned from sunny Mexico!

This was my view every morning!  Nothing grey about this holiday at all.  Not the weather, nor the clothes!

IMG_3518

Before my trip, I was out shopping at Marshall’s with friends one evening when I stumbled across a very cool, yet simply styled moto jacket for $69.99!  Unfortunately, it wasn’t my size, but it was my friend’s size.  As much as she felt guilty about the purchase, she went home with the jacket.  I decided then and there that I really wanted a moto jacket, so I went home and started pinning.

These two pictures caught my attention; the first one showing how to dress up the moto and the second one is a more casual look.

06641338bdc4b9724686c8d52986c7c8256ea0f3fea9a36fcbcb1c666dceeba4

Before my trip, I took a quick trip to Winners and found my own moto jacket!  It was a very simple style and only $29.99!   Before I knew it, we were through the check out stand and the jacket was mine!  I hung it up and pretty much forgot about it until I returned from vacation.

The day after we returned home, I was headed out for dinner with friends and I knew I wanted to wear my moto jacket.  I didn’t know exactly how to wear it, so I re-created the Pinterest image from above.

IMG_5963

This was an easy look to put together.  The top was a Macy’s find last Fall, dark skinny jeans, Geox booties and my new moto!  Love my new jacket and can’t wait to wear it more.  If you have any other ideas on how to wear it, let me know!

I count this as a successful Pinned & Tried!

Pinned & Tried – home

This is the home edition of Pinned & Tried.  As I have mentioned several times before in this blog, I love to pin!  Every night when the kids go to bed, I grab a iPad and do a few minutes hours of harmless pinning.

Months ago, I saw a pin of a farmhouse style of cabinet that was being used as linen storage in a bathroom.  I pinned it and immediately wanted something similar.  More pins would follow but I had yet to find my cabinet.  Here’s what I was looking for:

8608531dfa8791380787d568ac3e2f1d

d81338b61b126b3bad18ca6b91d93aa8

I was scouring craigslist regularly obsessively, but could not find my cabinet.  There was a close call about 2 months ago, but I was too late.

So, what to my wondering eyes should appear last week, but a craigslist ad with my cabinet in my neighbourhood at a fantastic price!  I quickly made contact with the seller and then sent my husband off to measure it up and provide a deposit.  Within 24 short hours, it was mine!

With a little help from me, the neighbour and our friendly plumbers (who happened to be at the house), we got the beast cabinet up two flights of stairs and into the kids’ bathroom.

It is exactly what I wanted to fill a niche behind the door.  I’ve started filling it up, but now realize the towels look a little sad and I could use a few more accessories to make it a fun beachy style bathroom for the kids.

But overall, I am really happy and this is one successful edition of Pinned & Tried – Home Edition!
